The SHALOM Act codifies into law the IHRA definition and examples of antisemitism. This vague definition wrongly conflates criticism of the state of Israel with antisemitism. Addressing growing antisemitism is vital, but despite its name, the bill does nothing to protect Jewish North Carolinians or combat discrimination. The right to criticize governments and their policies without fear of retribution is critical to a functioning democracy, but the SHALOM Act discourages constitutionally protected political speech. Governor Cooper signed the bill into law on July 1, 2024.
